New hospital wing for Mercy Hospital
26 April 2022
The Mercy Hospital redevelopment is progressing well, with construction of the main new hospital building due to start in late 2022.
This new wing will include a suite of operating theatres, an intensive care unit supported by new high-dependency care beds, and a ward of single patient bedrooms. As well as providing a pleasant environment for patients and staff, the designs are being carefully considered to improve patient flow and assist with new and innovative ways of delivering care.
The increased space will also provide additional capacity for specialists at Mercy Hospital to allow better and faster treatment to their patients.
Construction of the new wing began last year and included demolishing the ageing Stella Maris building on the northern side of the property.
There was significant preparation required before demolition, with contractors needing to separate the older building from adjacent buildings. This included removing walls and cutting foundations and floors to create a 3m space between the new and old buildings.
The building was demolished late last year and since then rock anchoring, piling and excavation work has been continuing on-site. MercyAscot has been working closely with contractors, and testing different ways of working to minimise noise and vibration for patients and specialists.
The new wing is expected to open in late 2024. Find out more here.
