Every year more than 40001 New Zealand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and over 7001 die from the disease.
Prostate cancer is the second highest cause of cancer death in men, behind lung cancer2.
This month is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. In support of Prostate Cancer Foundation’s annual awareness and fundraising campaign – Blue September – it’s a great time to refresh your knowledge about prostate cancer and when to refer your patients to a urologist.

EARLY DETECTION AND WHEN TO REFER
Patients are more likely to develop prostate cancer as they get older. It is more common in patients who have a sibling or parent with prostate cancer, and in families who carry certain genes such as the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.
Referring early can ensure your patient receives the support they need ahead of surgery, including physiotherapy to manage incontinence and erectile dysfunction, and access to counselling. These services, including The Prostate Clinic are available for patients through OneSixOne Medical Group.
Red flag signs and symptoms:
Patients should be referred if they have one or more of the following:
- PSA greater than 4; and/or
- Increasing PSA; and/or
- An abnormal digital rectal examination; and/or
- Significant family history of prostate cancer
